How to write a short drama script with Castfic

  1. Enter a logline and pick a genre.
  2. Switch the result to Script to read each episode in screenplay format.
  3. Download the .fountain file and open it in your screenwriting app.
  4. Generate the next three episodes; they follow the same outline and cast.

What a short drama script looks like

Short drama scripts are lean. A typical 90-second episode is one or two locations, 8–14 lines, and almost no stage direction beyond what the camera must show. Castfic writes to that shape:

ElementExample
Scene headingINT. HALE MANSION FOYER - NIGHT
ActionIvy steps inside. The ring catches the light. A tray hits the floor.
DialogueDANA: You were fired. I watched security walk you out.
DialogueIVY: And now I'm marrying the man who signs your checks.
CliffhangerRowan, behind her, quietly: "Welcome back, Ivy."

(Illustrative lines.)

Why Fountain

Fountain is a plain-text screenplay format. It opens in Highland, WriterDuet, Fade In, Slugline and Final Draft (via import), and it is readable as-is in any text editor. Each episode starts with its own heading, so a season stays in one file.

A formula for every episode

  1. Open on a visual hook — something the viewer understands with the sound off.
  2. Give the lead a goal for this episode only.
  3. Take it away twice.
  4. End on a line or a reveal that reframes everything before it.

The outline plans the bigger turns — the episode where the secret leaks, the one where the lead wins — so the scripts escalate across the season instead of repeating.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import the script into Final Draft?

Yes. Final Draft imports Fountain files. Highland, WriterDuet and Fade In open them directly.

How long are the scripts?

Each episode is written for 60–90 seconds on screen: usually one scene, up to 14 lines, and a cliffhanger.

Will the dialogue sound natural?

It is written short and spoken: one or two sentences per line, so it reads as a caption. Edit it like any first draft.

Can I use the scripts commercially?

Yes, the scripts you generate are yours to use. Avoid loglines built on characters you do not own the rights to.

Is it free?

1 free scene without an account, then 1 free scene a day after signing in with Google, plus the free Daily Scene. Scene Pass $4.99 for 15 scenes (no subscription), or Plus $7.99/month ($59/year).
